The diagnosis of ADHD at CEETA begins with an appointment, which is only made by telephone, and takes place in several stages in our Brussels practice, at the Louise Medical Centre.
Appointment with one of our nurses, followed by a brief interview with one of our specialized general practitioners (allow 1 hour and 30 minutes).
During your initial appointment, our nurse will conduct an electroencephalogram coupled with attentional tests.
Objective: Identify indications of attention deficit. The ADHD brain is characterized by cerebral hyperactivity with measurable signs. Attentional tests (auditory and visual) provide a measure of the brain's electrical activity. The EEG results will be analyzed by a psychiatrist before the next appointment.
Following the tests conducted by our nurse, you will meet with one of our general practitioners specializing in adult ADHD. Based on the previous test, if the diagnosis of ADHD seems plausible, you will be given the option to undergo a medication test.
Objective: Assess the response to psychostimulant treatment (by increasing the intra-synaptic quantity of catecholamines - dopamine and norepinephrine - in the brain). Neurobiological hypothesis of ADHD: The most plausible explanation for the disorder is that the ADHD brain faces a chronic lack of dopamine compared to neurotypical individuals. The goal of the medication test is to evaluate, following the intake of psychostimulants, the presence of a change in cognitive function and assess the nature of this change.
Appointment with Neuropsychologist followed by a brief interview with one of our specialized general practitioners (allow 1 hour and 30 minutes).
At a later date, you will have an appointment with one of our neuropsychologists. This meeting will be your occasion to explain your daily challenges, difficulties, and symptoms. In this interview, the neuropsychologist and you will discuss the results of various tests conducted during your first visit (EEG and questionnaires received by email).
The data collected from the tests and discussions will enable the neuropsychologist and the doctor to create the cognitive profile and systematic patient history. All of this helps determine if the overall complaints align with an ADHD profile.
The goal is to demonstrate that ADHD is the best explanation for all of these symptoms.
Following your interview with the neuropsychologist, you will meet one of our general practitioners. They will synthesize the results of various tests and discussions. This is the moment when the diagnosis of ADHD will be established if applicable.
The general practitioner will provide an explanation of various recognized approaches for ADHD, outlining the pros and cons of each:
Together, you will have a discussion regarding the best treatment for targeted care based on your short-term and long-term needs and goals.
